Songfacts®:

  • Derek Hoke has been in the music business for a long time and has seen his fair share of folks trying to climb to the top, only to tumble back down if they manage to get there - an observation he sings about on this tune.

"'On Top Of The Mountain is the classic 'careful what you wish for' kind of tune," the Nashville singer-songwriter explained. "There's fame in there and clout-chasing people. People who want to be famous more than anything else. And also about people that are on top and either don't stay there very long or people that do but… just how many people are wanting that for some reason, and maybe they don't even know why. So some of that's taking a look at that as an observer of people trying to do whatever it takes to achieve whatever they think makes them happy... be careful what you wish for."
  • This is the closing track from Hoke's Electric Mountain album, which features the singles "Wild And Free " and "Let Go Of My Heart."
