  • Here, in a display of vulnerability, Dermot Kennedy pours his heart out as he grapples with the agony of loss and the haunting fear of being forgotten. A sense of fading from his former flame's memory consumes him, compelling the singer to pen a poignant anthem aptly titled "Don't Forget Me."
  • With each heartfelt line, Kennedy captures the essence of his experience, articulating the agonizing sensation of slowly vanishing from the thoughts of someone he once held dear. To defy this impending oblivion, he weaves a musical story that serves as a time capsule of their shared moments.

I get this feeling like I'm fading from your memory
So I wrote this song and called it "Don't Forget Me"
Every time you hear it will you smile (Smile)
And tell the one you're with I was that guy? (Guy)
Ooh, even though you had to let me go
    Don't forget me
    Just don't forget me

Through the lingering notes, Kennedy implores a wish - each time she hears this song, may it elicit a smile, a radiant reminder of their once vibrant connection. Kennedy wants her to share this memory with her new partner, ensuring that he too recognizes the significance of their past.
  • Kennedy knows his former sweetheart has moved on but asks her to keep a small part of him in heart.

"I think as well even say if it doesn't work out, like no relationship is a waste," he told BBC Radio 1's Clare Amfo. "Like nothing is a waste of time because everything influences you are and how you feel and forward. And so I just it's a scary idea that you could be vulnerable with somebody and ultimately be forgotten."

"I think like, I really enjoy writing songs from the perspective of somebody else in my life and I think that's important," Kennedy continued, "because if I'm the storyteller from my hometown, and from my circle of community, it's like it's lovely, because it's quite easy for me to take that on and feel it deeply."

"I think you're trying to just not become immune to it," he added. "Say for example, the other day when somebody's kind of like, 'oh, this person passed away' and I just about found the strength to come to the show or whatever, cause things like that. I get told them quite regularly if you try to really take that on and then when you're on stage, be conscious of the fact that they're in the crowd, but also, the battery is a real thing. You got to look after yourself as well."
  • Kennedy teamed up with British songwriter and producer Steve Mac to co-write "Don't Forget Me." Mac has written and produced hits for many artists, including Westlife, Little Mix, and Ed Sheeran. He previously collaborated with Kennedy on the Irishman's 2022 single "Kiss Me."
  • Steve Mac co-produced the track with Prgrshn. Frequent Stormzy collaborator Prgrshn co-produced 10 out of the 12 tracks on the rapper's 2022 This Is What I Mean album, including "Hide & Seek" and "Firebabe."
  • "Forget Me" features on the 2023 version of Kennedy's sophomore album Sonder. Sonder (2023) comprises the previous 11 tracks plus this song.
