Songfacts®:

  • Beyoncé Knowles and Michelle Williams wrote the song's lyrics as a plea to their bandmate Kelly Rowland to escape an abusive relationship. Asked during a 2013 interview on Philadelphia's Hot 107.9 Morning Show if she became emotional when she first heard 'Girl,' Rowland confessed: "Of course, I did! The girls wrote it for me. Destiny's Child is deeper than what people see on the surface. Those are my homies for life. For life! Those girls, we stuck with each other - period."
  • Beyoncé's sister, Solange Knowles, penned another song for Destiny Fulfilled, "Bad Habit," inspired by the same turbulent relationship. Eight years later Rowland gave her own account of her verbally and physically abusive boyfriend on "Dirty Laundry."
  • Released as Destiny Fufilled's third single, the song peaked at #23 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, making it Destiny's Child's lowest charting single since 1999's "Bug A Boo."
