Songfacts®:

  • Devendra Banhart comments in the October 2007 edition of Q Magazine: "Seahorse is about reincarnation. It's about the mercurial - and alchemical - voyage of our emotional, sort of... no-time. I'm very proud to say that it has my first key change."
  • Smokey Rolls Down Thunder was Banhart's first album to chart in America. He recorded it in the Topanga Canyon area of California, a mystical setting where Neil Young and Gram Parsons did some of their best work.

According to Banhart, there was some bad mojo in the home studio where he recorded it: Everyone got sick. He and his crew powered forward and completed the album under these adverse conditions.

  • The Family Grave from BrighotnI like the way this track quotes musically Dave Brubeck's Take Five and other jazz. It's a gorgeous song.
