All About Waiting

Songfacts®:

  • This song invokes the anxiety that many Americans felt in 2015 and 2016 as global warming, political malfeasance, and a concentration of power led to a general feeling that the world was falling apart. In the chorus, Harrison repeats the same line: "It's not like you used to be." This was a common refrain in these times.
  • "Who's programming your brain?"

That's the question Harrison wants listeners to ask themselves. In an interview with Songfacts, he said: "Either you are programming it, or everyone else is programming it. Human beings are really magical things, so make sure you're in charge of you. And you have to start by learning who you are, where do you come from, where are you going, and then, very much thinking about self-healing and self-compassion.

To be in this world right now is a very hard place, and it's hard in different ways for everyone. Just the sheer amount of information is enough to drive you mad."
  • In a literal sense, Harrison does know all there is to know about waiting; he didn't release his first album, In///Parallel, until he was 39 years old. As the son of George Harrison, he knew that his first album would face intense scrutiny, so he remained less visible for the first two decades of his music career, working on soundtracks and in different bands. By 2017, he felt he was ready to put out an album under his own name.
  • The animated video was done by Adam Osgood. It follows a woman who is working on genetic mutations with bees. As nature gets more disrupted, she becomes ill and eventually useless to her company, which replaces her with a clone.
  • Camila Grey, who has performed with Harrison in different collectives, including Summer Moon, is the female vocalist on this track.
  • This was the first single from In///Parallel. Harrison performed it on Conan and Jimmy Kimmel Live.
