Songfacts®:

  • Dido could be pretty hard on herself early in her career, often second guessing her choices and sometimes falling into deep depressions. "I'm No Angel" is a song where she explains how she doesn't always do the right thing, especially when it comes to love. Some of the lines were taken from a postcard she wrote to her boyfriend, Bob Page. She asked for the postcard back so she could use it for the lyrics.
  • Dido wrote the song around 1995 while she was touring with her brother Rollo's band, Fearless, completing it later with the songwriters Paul Statham and Pascal Gabriel. It was issued in 1999 on her debut album, No Angel, which didn't take off until 2001 after Eminem sampled her song "Thank You" to provide the female counterpoint to his hit "Stan."
  • Dido was a pretty big deal back in the day: The No Angel album was a worldwide hit in 2001, selling about 8 million copies. It also became the UK's biggest-selling debut album by a female artist. Her second album, released in 2003, also did well, but by 2006 she was burned out and took and extended break from touring, during which time she started a family. She hit the road again in 2019 after releasing her album Still On My Mind.
