Songfacts®:

  • Diplo's country project Diplo Presents Thomas Wesley: Chapter 2 - Swamp Savant, found the internationally renowned DJ and producer collaborating with a laundry list of some of the 2020s' biggest country stars. But for his final release from the album, Diplo broke from the mold and hooked up with two unexpected artists: alt-pop singer-songwriter Jessie Murph and rapper Polo G.

"Had this song in my bag for a while," said Diplo. "I knew it was special and I can't think of better way to finish this chapter of my Thomas Wesley project. Jessie's voice is perfect and Polo G might be unexpected but that's just what I want to do when I work on country music... break some rules."
  • The song is about the power of love to heal a broken heart. Murph sings about how she was so hurt in the past that she convinced herself she could never trust again. She compares trying to trust again to trying to make a river run upstream or a mountain into a valley - impossible tasks. But Murph's new love has made her feel like she has never had her heart broken before.
  • Polo G sticks to a similar topic in his verse. He raps about how he has always felt like he was "too much to handle," but his new love has made him feel like he is finally worthy. He compares love to a gamble, but is willing to take the risk because he knows that his new love is worth it.
  • Diplo, Jessie Murph and Amy Allen co-wrote "Heartbroken" with songwriters Amy Allen and Ilsey Juber, and with the track's co-producers, Elie Rizk and Maesic.

Maine native Amy Allen's resumé also includes Halsey's "Without Me," Harry Styles' "Adore You," and Selena Gomez' "Back to You."

Californian singer-songwriter Ilsey Juber's other credits include Shawn Mendes' "Mercy," Martin Garrix (featuring Bebe Rexha)'s "In The Name Of Love," and Mark Ronson (featuring Miley Cyrus)'s "Nothing Breaks Like A Heart."
