Songfacts®:

  • After their first single "The Upstroke" flopped, the production team of Stock-Aitken-Waterman scored with their second, an outrageous piece of camp performed by Divine, the rather robust New York drag artist.

"You Think You're a Man" was written by Geoff Deane, produced by Waterman with Barry Evangeli and directed by Pete Ware with Matt Aitken and Mike Stock. Issued by The Proto Record Company in June 1984, it was backed by "Give It Up". It reached #16 in the UK and was also a hit in both Germany and New Zealand. In Australia it reached #8, and in Switzerland, #9.
  • In the 2012 ITV documentary The Hit Factory - The Stock, Aitken and Waterman Story, Pete Waterman said they spent hours and hours working on the song to get the sound just right because once you saw the video you either fell on the floor laughing or you walked out of the room and switched the TV off, though presumably not in that order! >>>
