Songfacts®:

  • "I Hope" is about longing for a better future: "I hope, you can all live more fearlessly. And you can lose all the pain and misery." The song encourages listeners to lead by example, for the sake of the children who are looking up to them: "I don't wanna hear nothing else about killing. And that it's God's will. Cause our children are watching us. They put their trust in us. They're gonna be like us. So let's learn from our history. And do it differently."
  • Kevin Moore, better known as Keb'Mo', wrote "I Hope" alongside all three Dixie Chicks (Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Robison). Emily Robison spoke about working with Moore: "Keb'Mo' was one of the last writers we wrote with, and it was so nice and so comfortable working with him. With what he's been through and where he grew up, it's important to him to write positive, uplifting songs." Natalie Maines added: "On the other hand, he wasn't afraid to get political, and this ultimately turned out to be a pretty serious song. Hopeful and positive, but serious."
  • Dixie Chicks debuted the song on September 9, 2005, during Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast, a benefit concert held in order to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The band later released "I Hope" as a charity single. This charity version of the song was recorded the night before the telethon and features Mike Campbell on electric guitar, Benmont Tench on keyboards, Robert Randolph on pedal steel guitar, Jonny Polonsky on acoustic guitar, Justin Meldal-Johnsen on bass and Michael Bland on drums. All profits from the single went to Habitat For Humanity and the American Federation of Musicians Gulf Coast Relief Fund.
  • This song was nominated Best Country Song and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 2006 Grammy Awards, but lost in both categories.
  • The version of the song that appears on the Taking the Long Way album features a guitar solo by John Mayer.
