Songfacts®:

  • Here, Dizzee Rascal criticizes the decadence of the environment his career has thrown him into. "I was in this restaurant in Miami with massive f--king yachts pulling up to it and all these smug pricks in it started spraying Champagne around while waiters handed out umbrellas," he grimaced to NME. "I felt miserable. I looked at it, like, 'Is this it? You've worked hard, you've made it and is this what you do now? You spray Champagne around for a laugh?'"
  • Dizzee also rails during the song against the post-Olympic social-cleansing of his old east London stomping ground. He samples a speech by the former mayor of London Boris Johnson, who makes the promise that London will never become ghettoized like Paris.

"Boris Johnson because he said 'We wouldn't move all the poor people out' – and then that's exactly what happened," Dizzee explained.
  • "Everything Must Go" also samples Margaret Thatcher. "I've never seen someone so loved and so hated in England, Rascal said of the late UK Conservative prime minister to Q magazine. "I thought that quote was perfect because it sounds like the attitude of capitalism, full stop. It's about the money, especially London. Anyone who acts like it is not is lying."
