Songfacts®:

  • The first single from DJ Khaled's Suffering From Success album began life as a remix of Drake's "Started From The Bottom" track. Khaled's update features a new beat and a sung chorus him, as well as fresh verses from Drake in which he proclaims a staunch moratorium on friends, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne. The song is subtitled "SFTB Remix."
  • Khaled previously worked with his friends Drake, Weezy and Ross on the hit single "I'm On One." It took him two years to get the trio together again, with Drake proving to be especially difficult to tie down. "Drake's a real creative person, I'm a real creative person and sometimes it just doesn't match that time to do what we gotta do," Khaled told MTV News. "Not anybody can just work with a Drake and I know that. As many records as I put out in my game, I know that and I respect that."

So Khaled decided the best route was to take an uncompleted Drake record and finish it off . "He had the skeleton and I was like, 'Yo, I need that, let me go finish that.' And then you see Wayne jump on it and Ross jump on it," the We the Best executive explained. "It's just good, good energy and it came out to be an amazing #1 record."
  • The Colin Tilley and Drake directed music video was shot on May 15 and 16, 2013 in Miami, Florida and sees the hip-hop buddies re-enacting a scene from their lives in the mid-1990s. The clip also features cameos by Ace Hood and Birdman among others.
  • The song had an earlier version that featured Atlanta rapper Future singing lyrics from C-Murder's "Down for My Ni--az," but they were taken out for some reason.
