Songfacts®:

  • Also known as "Cat's Squirrel," this blues number is known for instrumental covers by Cream, Jethro Tull and Blodwyn Pig. It was written and originally recorded by the Mississippi bluesman Doctor Ross, who released it in 1961.

This being the blues, a woman is driving him mad. He writes her letters and tries to love her, but she won't love him back. She's unattainable, like a cat squirrel in a tree.
  • Ross' original runs 2:22. The Jethro Tull version, arranged by guitarist Mick Abrahams, runs 5:42 and appears on their debut album This Was. According to Michael Heatley in The Complete Deep Purple, Ritchie Blackmore stole the riff for the Deep Purple hit This version has another claim to fame in that for "Woman From Tokyo." >>>

  • Mick Abrahams revisited this song with his group Blodwyn Pig, which released it on their 2011 album All Said And Done. This version runs 10:56.
