Songfacts®:

  • Here, Doja Cat addresses her underwhelming partner who is obsessed with the sexual side of the relationship. Comparing him to a hound dog, she condescendingly invites him to "come find a treat."
  • Doja Cat wrote "Vegas" for the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann's Elvis biopic and combines her modern music with references to the late King of Rock and Roll. She sets the song in Las Vegas where Elvis had an extended residency, and interpolates Big Mama Thornton's version of "Hound Dog," famously covered by the King.
  • The choice of "Hound Dog" is fitting. The classic '50s number has a similar topic of the singer slamming a selfish, exploitative lover. Also, Elvis first came across the song when he caught Freddie Bell and the Bellboys singing it at their Vegas show.
  • Doja Cat wrote "Vegas" with Los Angeles writers and producers Yeti Beats and Rogét Chahayed. Yeti Beats is Doja Cat's go-to producer and Chahayed also collaborated with the rapper/singer on "Kiss Me More" and "Ain't S--t."

The writers of "Hound Dog," Mike Stoller and Jerry Leiber, also get credited.
  • Doja Cat first teased "Vegas" with a one-minute version on her official YouTube channel on April 15, 2022. She performed a longer snippet of the song during her performance at Coachella two days later. Doja released "Vegas' as the lead single from the Elvis Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on May 6, 2022.
  • The Child-directed music video finds Doja getting ready for a performance at a concert hall while people dance around her. The clip features a cameo by singer and actress Shonka Dukureh, who plays Big Mama Thornton in Elvis. Child, a Louisiana director and artist, also shot Doja Cat's "Woman" clip.
