Songfacts®:

  • This steamy track finds Doja Cat engaged in an affair with The Weeknd. The songstress already has a man in her life but feels conflicted because the sex with her illicit lover is so good.
  • During his verse, the Weekend acknowledges that he and Doja both want to give into temptation. He also concedes she owes her boyfriend some loyalty as she met him before finding fame and fortune. Doja responds by telling him:

You right, I got my guy
    But I, I can't help it, I want you
  • Doja Cat wanted the Weeknd to feature on Planet Her but wasn't sure which track would be best to host the Canadian star. According to Doja, she showed him one tune, which she and her team thought was "the perfect song, bit it ended up not working." After playing The Weeknd the original solo version of "You Right," which had already been completed with two verses, he became so obsessed with it they took off one of her verses so he could add his own.
  • This is Doja Cat's second collaboration with The Weeknd, following her appearance on the remix of his After Hours track "In Your Eyes."
  • Doja Cat and The Weeknd wrote the song with its producer, Dr. Luke. The hitmaking producer discovered Doja and signed her to his Kemosabe Records label before co-writing many of her early hits, such as "Say So" and "Kiss Me More."
  • Doja Cat released "You Right" as the second single from Planet Her. She named the record after a celestial world where all species and races of space exist in harmony. Each music video filmed for the project occurs on different locations across the planet. This song's Quentin Deronzier-directed visuals open with Doja walking through a palace filled with Libran symbols, the feline pop singer's astrological sign. The Weeknd then joins Doja in the clouds.
