Songfacts®:

  • The second single from Dolly Parton's Better Day album finds the Country star singing about all she's had to give up in order to have a successful career. She said: "I think it's so totally everybody that has a dream and desire to be successful, and in order to be successful we have to give up things that we'd rather not. But if we're not willing to make that sacrifice usually we don't see those dreams come true."
  • Speaking to The Boot, Dolly explained early in her career she wanted to travel, be loved, be on stage and earn good money adding, "I just thought, 'If I am gonna get to where I really want to go, I'm going to have to be willing to make any sacrifice it takes."

The Nashville icon went on to say that she has certainly paid her dues. "I seem like a happy person, and I am, "she reflected. "I have a happy heart. But I've been through heartache, I've known my sorrows. I paid my major prices for my career, but I wouldn't trade it for nothing. Yes, it's been worth the sacrifice."
