In 2022, the legendary Dolly Parton found herself in the spotlight of the esteemed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When the humble country superstar received a prestigious nomination, she initially waved off the honor, asserting that there were numerous other artists more deserving of the recognition. However, her stance eventually shifted and she graciously accepted the nomination.
But that wasn't all. Parton, never one to shy away from taking artistic risks, made a resounding statement in response to her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination by recording an entire rock album. The resulting record, Rock Star, features nine original songs and 21 covers of rock classics. Dolly released "World On Fire" as its lead single on May 11, 2023.
"World On Fire" is a poignant rock ballad that delves into the tumultuous state of our world. Dolly Parton assumed the role of both songwriter and producer, joined by her trusted collaborator and manager, Kent Wells.
Parton candidly laments the world engulfed in flames, a metaphorical representation of the myriad challenges we face. She confronts the harsh realities of life, from losing faith in a higher power, to the grip of self-serving politicians and the ever-present threat of gun violence.
In a plea for collective action, Parton implores the listener to rise above the chaos and extend a hand of compassion. She beseeches us to show love, to stand up for what is right, and to heal the wounds inflicted upon our fractured society. Parton's message resounds, urging us to let kindness prevail, to forge friendships, and to extinguish the flames of hatred that threaten to consume us.
Throughout the song, Parton emphasizes a poignant refrain, "Liar, liar, the world's on fire." With each repetition, she confronts those who choose to turn a blind eye to the profound troubles plaguing our planet's current state of affairs.
This powerful line draws inspiration from a well-known childhood expression: "liar, liar, pants on fire." Familiar to many, especially youngsters, this playful phrase serves as an innocent and non-offensive means of calling out dishonesty.
Speaking on ABC's Good Morning America, Parton said "World On Fire" is fitting to the times we're living in. "It's really kind of about the times, and how we can do a little better if we try," she said. "Try to heal the divide and just get a long a little better," Parton continued. "And so it's really got a great message to it. But it's also good and solid, kind of like a rock anthem."
Dolly Parton took the spotlight at the 58th Academy of Country Music Awards on May 11, 2023, when she closed the show with the debut of "World On Fire." Parton took on double duties at the ceremony, as she also shouldered the responsibility of co-hosting alongside Garth Brooks.
Dolly Parton's music has found its way onto rock radio before. For instance, her timeless classic, "
Jolene," has inspired a diverse range of rock artists to lend their own interpretations to the beloved tune. Among the notable acts that have ventured into the realm of "Jolene" covers are The White Stripes, 10,000 Maniacs, and Cake.
Dolly Parton lays into politicians in the third verse.
Don't get me started on politics
Now how are we to live in a world like this
Greedy politicians, present and past
They wouldn't know the truth if it bit 'em in the ass
Asked during an appearance on NBC's Today which politicians she was referring to, Dolly answered, "All of 'em. Any of 'em. I don't think any of 'em are trying hard enough."
The country star added that the divisive nature of modern politics makes it difficult to find solutions. "I just really think often that they worry more about their party than they do about the people," she said. "If we just do what we felt was the right thing, rather than 'Who's gonna lose?' or 'Who's gonna win this?' or 'Who's gonna look better if they do this?' rather than what comes from the heart."
"World on Fire" was Dolly Parton's first release to land on one of Billboard's rock-themed charts. It debuted at #13 on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart on May 20, 2023 before climbing to the summit a week later.
Rockstar debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200, becoming Dolly Parton's highest-charting solo studio album. Her previous best on the all-genre chart was #6, reached in 2014 with Blue Smoke. Trio, her collaborative album with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, also peaked at #6.
