Songfacts®:

  • Running 3:19, this Mickey Jupp composition is a thematic Dr. Feelgood song. Although guitarist Jupp was never a member of the band, he was very active in the pub rock scene at the time. The song is an invitation from the doctor to feel good all night, hopefully without the tragic end of the Wishbone Ash track "Doctor".
  • "Down At The Doctors" was released as a single on the United Artists Records label in September 1978, backed by "Take A Tip". The first track from the Private Practice album, it has a harmonica solo by vocalist Lee Brilleaux as well as the usual guitar solo. >>>

  • At the end of the guitar solo, we hear Lee Brilleaux growl, "eight bars of piano," which was presumably an instruction to the engineer to dub in another instrument at some point in the future. We never did get to hear the piano and Lee's request was never wiped from the version commercially.
