Songfacts®:

  • The blues is associated more with the Mississippi Delta than with Canvey Island on the Thames Estuary, but any Delta bluesman would have been proud to have written this track, the live version of which runs to around eight and a half minutes and features some blistering guitar by new boy Steve Walwyn, who even looks like Gary Moore. (This is from Live Legends).

Not to be confused with any other song of the same title - and there are at least three - the Dr. Feelgood song was co-written by guitarist John Mayo with Messrs Brilleaux, Martin and Sparks.

According to Tony Moon in Down by the Jetty: The Dr. Feelgood Story, it emerged from a studio jam with vocalist Lee Brilleaux improvising the lyrics while the others pieced it together. They were busy touring at the time. This was for the 1979 Let It Roll album, but the definite recording is surely the aforementioned live performance from 1989 with Steve Walwyn - who joined the band that year - playing a fine, extended solo. >>>
