Songfacts®:

  • Here, Drake reminisces on a relationship that went off course once he became famous.

We started this from the bottom, now you alone there

Drake is referencing his 2013 track "Started from the Bottom" as he recounts his rise to fame from nothing.

Once the Toronto MC blew up, he could share some of the rewards of his success with his friend.

But I treated you like gold, I was all in
Spoiled rotten, they could smell you 'fore you walked in

In hindsight, Drake realizes that the person wasn't a genuine friend; he just wanted to reap the fruits of his hard work. When this guy saw Drizzy's career take off and his never got off the ground, he became disillusioned. The OVO leader does not specify the nature of their fall out, but he feels betrayed and their relationship will never be the same.

How you feelin' in your soul since you sold that?
I'll be better off without you, and we know that

Sadly, his pal got "lost in the game."
  • Drake concludes each verse by stating everything he says in the song is true.

I'm not tryna make no song, these are cold facts
  • That's the voice of Dennis Graham (Drake's father) on the song's intro, interlude, and outro sampled from an Instagram Live broadcast they did on March 21, 2020. Drizzy previously borrowed his dad's voice for the interlude on "Jodeci Freestyle" with J. Cole in 2013. Graham Sr. is also heard on the outro of the 2014 cut "Worst Behavior."
