Songfacts®:

  • Here, a dejected Drake is pining for his girlfriend. She's been out all night clubbing and now she's on her way home. Drake wants his lover to race his mind - spend time with him – but she's drunk and not interested in being sociable.
  • Drake recounts hitting up his girl on the phone, asking her to come home. Some reviewers have compared this song to the Take Care track "Marvin's Room," where he drunk dials an ex. In that instance Drake was intoxicated – here he's just lonely and on the receiving end of a drunk lover.
  • During the third verse, Drake reflects on their dissolving relationship. He ponders whether he handled his lover "too softly" and admits there's no future for them.

If your whole heart wasn't in it, I know a piece of it was
Posted that pic you sent me, it wasn't recent enough
How I'm supposed to wife it? You not Ayesha enough

Drake can't commit to someone who doesn't fully love him. He holds the girl to the high standard set by cooking TV personality Ayesha Curry, who is married to his close friend, NBA superstar Steph Curry.
  • The song samples a couple lines from The Notorious B.I.G.'s 1997 cut "Dead Wrong."
  • Drake's longtime producer Noah "40" Shebib produced the track with:

Nile "Govi" Goveia. He also co-produced Nicki Minaj's collaboration with Drake and Lil Wayne, "Seeing Green."

Bedroom pop artist Monsune has two production credits on Certified Lover Boy: "Race My Mind" and Drake's collaboration with Tems, "Fountains."
