Songfacts®:

  • In this infectious, fast-paced house track, Drake raps about some "sticky" situations he finds himself in. Concerning both bedroom activities and men that set traps for him, Drizzy tells us, "you know how sticky it get."
  • Drake covers a smorgasbord of other topics, ranging from his mom's views on his career to his Homer jewelry (Homer is Frank Ocean's luxury brand). He also references Young Thug's incarceration.

Free Big Slime out the cage

Drake's friend and frequent collaborator Young Thug goes by the alias "Big Slime." On May 9, 2022, Young Thug was arrested and thrown into jail on racketeering charges. Drake also appealed for the release of Young Thug and his affiliates in the video for "Falling Back."
  • The song ends with a clip of the late fashion designer Virgil Abloh, who Drake dedicated his album to. It's taken from his 2017 "Everything in Quotes" lecture at Columbia University GSAPP, where Abloh discusses his work with Kanye West on the Yeezus album cover art.
  • Drake recorded this song for Honestly, Nevermind. The album represents a departure for the Toronto star as most tracks find him crooning over dance beats. "Sticky" is one of two cuts where Drake raps rather than sings (the other is "Jimmy Cooks).
  • Gordo (aka veteran DJ Carnage) came up with the beat while on a plane and texted Drake. He revealed to GQ, "When he replied at 4pm I was already in the kitchen at his house. I played him the beat and he was like, 'Woah.'"
  • Gordo produced five tracks in total on Honestly, Nevermind. Born Diamanté Blackmon, the Guatemalan-American DJ and record producer recorded two trap and EDM-focused albums under his Carnage moniker. They included collaborations with Migos ("Bricks") and ILoveMakonnen ("I Like Tuh"). Blackmon retired his Carnage project in 2017 to focus on his house-oriented music as Gordo.
  • Australian singer Ry X originally wrote "Sticky" for his 2022 Blood Moon album. It wasn't quite ready for the record when he started collaborating on it with Gordo. They finessed it a bit and Drake loved it, so they gave it to him.
  • The video shows Drake living his best life as he gets lifted from the stage to the private jet, onto the yacht, then to the club and his mansion. Drizzy's photographer, Theo Skudra, directed the luxurious clip.
