Songfacts®:

  • Drake debuted this piano-led track during his September 13, 2013 appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The Toronto rapper introduced the tune by saying that the words he was about to spit were out of care. "Before I do this song," he said, "I just want to say to my friends and family, I want the best for everybody and I love you all."
  • The song is in part a seize-the-day pep talk to a loved one. He raps:

My uncle used to have all these things on his bucket list
And now he's acting like, 'Oh well, this is life, I guess'
    Nah, f--k that s—t
Listen, man, you could still do what you want to do

Drake also talks about his mom, saying she is "Cooped up in her apartment, telling herself that she's too sick to get dressed."

Drake has rapped about his mother on several other tracks including his single "Successful," where he talks about a difficult time in her life when distressed by seeing a deterioration in her own elderly mom, she tried to run away.
  • The song features the British soul singer-songwriter Sampha crooning the hook. The London native also contributed to Drake's NWTS Best Buy bonus track "The Motion."
  • This was co-produced by Toronto native Nineteen85. He told Billboard magazine regarding the song.

"There's an honesty in the way Drake raps on it that we don't often hear from him - he's touching on personal topics, like family. The beat [which features a hook from Sampha] works with what he's saying. It's one of the songs that's not as fun, that brings different emotions to the music."
