Songfacts®:

  • This was a late addition to The Big To-Do, the eighth studio album by the Alternative Country band Drive-By Truckers. The LP was recorded over 25 days in three concentrated sessions during the first part of 2009: "We had it mixed, mastered, and completely done, and Cooley wrote the best song that just needed to be on it," co-frontman Patterson Hood chuckled in press materials. "So we went back in and recorded, mixed, and mastered 'Birthday Boy' pretty much in one fell swoop."
