Songfacts®:

  • The whole album is based on the history of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Here are some stories about the band that are mentioned in the lyrics:
Skynyrd rented a house in Jacksonville called "Hell House," that had very little insulation, few windows, and no air conditioning.
Some of the shows Lynyrd Skynyrd played in their early years were outdoor shows at local venues.
In their early years, Lynyrd Skynyrd was reported to be on the road a total of 300 days out of the year. This lead to hurried recording in the studio and little time for rest away from the band. Tensions were very high and the band would use drugs and alcohol to pass the time.
"Ain't No Good Life" is a song from the Street Survivors album.
Many groups hated following Lynyrd Skynyrd even though they were the headlining act. The Kinks were supposed to headline a show with Skynyrd but supposedly bowed out feeling it was impossible to follow up. In a concert headlined by Peter Frampton, half of the crowd left after Lynyrd Skynyrd opened the show. >>>
