Songfacts®:

  • Mick Jones was the lead guitarist of the UK punk outfit The Clash until 1983 and co-founder of the band Big Audio Dynamite. Jones has also been an occasional producer for the likes of Ian Hunter and The Libertines. This song was inspired by the musician pilfering a dessert belonging to Turn Up That Dial producer Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Flogging Molly).
  • Dropkick Murphys lead singer Ken Casey said during an episode of After School Radio with Mark Hoppus that Hutt sowed the song's seeds when he related the story of the incident to the band during Turn Up That Dial pre-production. Hutt recounted that just before their lunch break that he was working in a building containing several studios with the one kitchen. He put a pudding into the fridge and when he returned a few hours later to eat it, there was Jones, who was producing another project, devouring his dessert.

After Hutt had shared his tale, everyone in the band took a break for lunch except for Casey. By the time everyone had finished eating and returned to the studio, Casey had penned "Mick Jones Nicked My Pudding."

He added: "It's a little bit, obviously, about what really happened but also the analogy that [you] don't meet your idols, they might let you down."
  • Dropkick Murphys gave the track its live debut during a live-streamed St Patrick's Day gig on March 17, 2020. Following the positive response to the song, The Celtic punk outfit dropped the official studio version four days later – having completed it just before the Covid lockdown began.
  • Kes Glozier (Stereophonics' "Bust This Town") directed the video. The clip combines band footage with animation that directly references the pudding pilfering incident, courtesy of artist Adam Murphy.
