Songfacts®:

  • The Dropkick Murphys wrote "Time To Go" for the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. It appears on their album Blackout, and also on a promotional CD the Bruins organization released.

The Murphys formed in Quincy, Massachusetts, which is a suburb of Boston and crazy about the local teams. The band are baseball fans as well: they also recorded "Tessie" for the Boston Red Sox.
  • The chorus goes:

    Go! Go! Black and gold!
    Old-time hockey, bar the door

Black and gold are the official Bruins colors.

"Old-time hockey" references the team's signature style of play, which is known for being physically brutal (those outside Boston often go so far as to say "dirty").

"Bar the door" adds to the idea of the team's rough style, essentially saying, "Block off the exits so the visiting team can't escape from the whooping that's about to ensue."
  • And take the red to the orange line
Head for the street and the Causeway crowd

The red line refers to the Boston train (The T) route running through Quincy, which is where the Murphys are from. The red line connects to the orange, which leads to the TD Garden, where the Bruins play.

Causeway street runs just south of the Garden. It's full of restaurants and bars and is where Bruins fans go before and after the games.

The Fansided Bruins fan page is named Causeway Crowd.
  • Rancourt's ready, it's time to take to the ice

Rene Rancourt is a singer who performed the US and Canadian national anthems at Bruins home games for 42 years. He sang his last anthem for the team on April 8, 2018.
  • Top corner, five hole, off the post and in

In hockey, the potential scoring areas around a goalie are broken into five sections, with two top corners, two lower corners, and the "five hole," which is the space between a goalie's legs.
