Songfacts®:

  • This vivacious bilingual dance track is about trying to make up before a relationship ends in a breakup.

    I'm tired of talking
Feel myself saying the same old things
    But this love's important
Don't wanna lose, don't wanna lose you this way

The expression "kiss and make up," meaning to become reconciled, emerged in the 1940s as an alternative to the much older "to kiss and be friends."
  • The song is a collaboration between Dua Lipa and the four members of the Korean K-pop girl group Blackpink: Jisoo, Rosé, Lisa, and Jennie. It is one of several collaborations in 2018 between Western artists and K-Pop groups. Others include "MIC Drop (Steve Aoki Remix)" and "Idol (Nicki Minaj remix)," both by BTS, plus "Champion (RM Remix)" by Fall Out Boy.
  • Dua Lipa originally wrote the song with British singer-songwriter Chelcee Grimes back in 2017. Their other collaborations include the Dua Lipa Deluxe edition bonus tracks "Dreams" and "Bad Together."

The singer held onto the track for about a year as she knew she wanted to include someone else on it, but couldn't find the right people. When Dua met the Blackpink girls during her Seoul concert in May 2018, she suspected she'd finally found a home for the tune. The English songstress sent them the "Kiss and Make Up" demo and they quickly sent it back with their vocals having changed some of the lyrics to Korean.
  • BlackPink became the first-ever female K-pop group to enter the UK's Official Singles Chart Top 40 when this song arrived on the tally at #36.
