Ireland won the Eurovision song contest seven times from its inception in 1956, but its 2007 entry, "They Can't Stop The Spring", finished bottom. Because of this, and perhaps inspired by the somewhat novel winning entry for the previous year, Lordi's "Hard Rock Hallelujah", some bright spark decided to enter the TV puppet Dustin The Turkey in 2008. Dustin's song was composed by Darren Smith and Simon Fine, though the Irish TV station RTÉ One credited the turkey himself as the third co-writer! On stage, Dustin was assisted by four female co-singers/dancers.
The former Irish MEP Dana Rosemary Scallon was one of the judges who sat on the panel which decided to enter "Ireland Douze Pointes" for the contest; as well as a loud dissenting voice she was a former Eurovision contestant, having won the 1970 contest as Dana with "All Kinds Of Everything." She said the song would go down great on the dance floor but not at Eurovision. Her words were prophetic, although Dustin received massive publicity, he failed to qualify for the contest, fortunately some might say. >>>

Paul from Dublin, IrelandTo Alexander Baron, the author of the two comments below. You insinuate that it was fortunate this song didn't qualify. Why? Because it was something different? A little fun? Perhaps a little jealousy that Ireland won it so many times, despite not putting forward established stars (Cliff Richard, Sandie Shaw, Lulu, The Shadows) like the brits do? Also, Ireland never finished the competition with no points, again unlike the brits.
