Songfacts®:

  • This was the song that launched Ed Sheeran's career. He wrote it at the age of 14 as he struggled to come to terms with the death of one of his best friends, Stuart Dines. Ed's school pal was killed when a lorry crashed into their bus while on a school trip to Austria. "We Are" was played at Stuart's funeral.
  • Four years later, Sheeran included the heartbreaking track in his set at The Bedford pub in Balham, SW London, which was recorded for a self-released live EP. Talent scouts from the Atlantic record label were among the audience and were so moved by the song they signed him three months later.
