  • This is about as close as Irving Berlin ever came to writing a suggestive song, though one has to bear in mind not only the social mores of the time but the censor. This ditty, in 4/4 time, was copyrighted October 28, 1919, and was introduced by Eddie Cantor in the Ziegfeld Follies Of 1919, but this is really a song for a woman. Marilyn Monroe recorded it - with slightly altered lyrics - but the most memorable version was performed by Madelaine Kahn at Carnegie Hall on May 11, 1988, the gala celebrating Berlin's 100th birthday. >>>
