Songfacts®:

  • "Get Over Yourself" was the first - and only - hit for Eden's Crush, a girl group formed on the TV series Popstars in 2001. Popstars, along with MTV's Making the Band (which gave us O-Town), was one of the first reality shows where bands were formed and given record deals - this was a few years before American Idol. Thanks to the show, the song got a lot of fanfare when it was released as their debut single, and it rose to #8 in America and #1 in Canada. It ended up being their only single - the group disbanded a year later.
  • "Get Over Yourself" is a sassy song in the spirit of Destiny's Child, who were huge at the time. It finds the five members of Eden's Crush letting a guy know they're done with him and he needs to get over himself. Compare to Destiny's Child's "Bug A Boo" or "Say My Name."
  • The most famous alumna from Eden's Crush is Nicole Scherzinger, who fronted another girl group starting in 2003: The Pussycat Dolls. But unlike her mates in Eden's Crush, Pussycat Dolls were primarily dancers, so Scherzinger did almost all the singing. She also did most of the talking in PCD; in Eden's Crush she was rather quiet in interviews, preferring to let the other girls answer the questions.
  • The song reached its chart peak in March 2001. That summer, the group toured with 'N Sync as and opening act, and later in the same role for Jessica Simpson.
  • The members of Eden's Crush weren't teenage ingenues when they formed on Popstars - they were all in their early 20s and had some schooling and jobs on their resumés. They were actually a little older than the teen-pop acts they were associated with.
  • The song was written by the team of Matthew Gerrard, John Keller and Michele Vice-Maslin. Gerrard went on to write songs for Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus) and Kelly Clarkson ("Breakaway").
  • The girls in Eden's Crush showed off their looks and moves in the music video, but MTV didn't give it much attention. Popstars was on the WB network, which had no ties to MTV.
