Songfacts®:

  • Although it was not his first hit, "For Me And My Gal" can't have done Edgar Leslie's reputation any harm. The lyricist, who a decade later would go on to co-write the massive hit "Among My Souvenirs" with Englishman Horatio Nicholls, penned the lyrics with E. Ray Goetz. The music was composed by George W. Meyer, and the song was published by Waterson, Berlin & Snyder of New York in 1917 with singer Carrie Lillie on the front cover. This is considered a song that works best with a male vocal; a contemporary recording was made by Billy Murray, but it was not until 1942 that the name was hijacked for a musical in which it was performed by Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. >>>

  • Pop/rock singer Nilsson covered this on his 1973 album of standards, A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night, in an arrangement by Gordon Jenkins.
  • The vaudeville comedy duo Van and Schenck recorded this in 1917.
  • This is the first song that Judy Garland and Gene Kelly perform together in For Me and My Gal, the film that put Garland on the map as an adult actress and introduced newcomer Kelly. Backed by David Rose (Garland's then-husband) and his Orchestra, their version peaked at #3 and stayed on the charts for 21 weeks. In 2010, the recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
  • Rock singer Freddy Cannon revived the song in 1961 on his Palisades Park album and landed at #71 on the pop chart.
  • Al Jolson performed this on the vaudeville stage, and it was later included on the 1957 compilation album The Jolson Story: Rock-a-Bye Your Baby.
  • Gene Kelly revisited the hit on the The Gene Kelly Show in 1959, but this time his partner was Garland's daughter Liza Minnelli. He performed it again in 1976 on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
  • Danny Thomas performed this on his sitcom Make Room For Daddy in the 1960 episode "Tonoose Makes the Wedding Plans."
