Songfacts®:

  • In this song, Edie Brickell sings about finding her power after a long period of self-reflection. In a Songfacts interview with Brickell, she said it was inspired by "just my feelings," adding, "I didn't set out with any intention to write an anthem or to write that kind of song. I allowed it to flow out from what I was feeling. So, that was the most fun experience playing with the band, that a mystery is revealed - even to yourself."
  • "My Power" was released in October 2020 as the first single from the Edie Brickell & New Bohemians album Hunter And The Dog Star, which was issued in February 2021. After landing a hit with their first single, "What I Am," in 1989, the band released one more album before taking a break, during which time Brickell married Paul Simon and raised three children. They returned with another album in 2006 but it wasn't until 12 years later that they released another, in part because of Brickell's many other projects, including an album with Steve Martin. It was surprising, then, when they released Hunter And The Dog Star just three years later. Also surprising, all five band members from their first album were still part of the band.
  • The band recorded this in Austin with producer Kyle Crusham. Edie Brickell improvised the lyrics in the studio, basing her vocal melody on the bass riff Brad Houser came up with.
  • The heavily layered music video was made by Willie Nelson's son, Micah Nelson, and Micah's wife, Alex Dascalu. There's a family connection: New Bohemians keyboard player Matt Hubbard is married to Martha Fowler, Willie's granddaughter. Edie Brickell recorded a song with Willie in 2020 called "Sing To Me Willie."
