The Marrow Song (Oh What A Beauty!)

Album: Big Band Classics (1952)

Songfacts®:

  • Although he is remembered principally for his brass band arrangements - such as The Ken Dodd Selection which includes the massive 1965 hit "Tears" - Stanley Smith Master was also a composer in his own right, and as this popular ditty in 6/8 time about a giant marrow showed, he also had a sense of humor.

The sheet music was - as usual - credited to his pen name Edrich Siebert, and copyright 1952 by Lawrence Wright Music of London.

The song was a hit in Australia in 1973 when it was recorded by one hit wonders Fantasy. Perhaps surprisingly, it does not appear to have had the same problems with the censor as many other less obviously risqué songs such as George Formby's "With My Little Stick Of Blackpool Rock." >>
