Songfacts®:

  • With music by William Jerome and Jack Mahoney and words by Jerome, this awkwardly named song in 2/4 time was recorded by a number of artists in the 1920s including Edward Meeker. An anti-Prohibition song published in 1918, it would have a curious echo in the well-known 1970 Kinks song which likewise features Lola and Coca-Cola ("At the table with Lola they will serve us Coca-Cola"). It is unlikely Ray Davies based or even heard the earlier song, but there are only so many words that can be rhymed with Coca-Cola, so this is almost certainly coincidence. >>
