Songfacts®:

  • This track, about a despairing woman, is an early Elton John/Bernie Taupin composition. In her biography Elton John in His Own Words, Susan Black says it is a song in a Johnny Mathis style. When he first teamed up with Bernie Taupin, Elton was principally a songwriter rather than a recording artist; the duo were under contract to Dick James - founder of Dick James Music - and "The Tide Will Turn For Rebecca" was given to Edward Woodward, who although best known as a dramatic actor, also had a fairly successful recording career.
  • Dick James died in 1986, and years later an original Elton John demo of the song was released on a compilation. >>>
