Eels was formed in California in 1995 by the band's front man Mark Oliver Everett, who is known by the stage name E.
Everett's father, Hugh Everett III, was a quantum physicist who proposed the many worlds theory (the idea that there are infinite parallel universes). Mark Everett had a strained relationship with his father during his childhood.
Hugh Everett III suffered a fatal heart attack at home in 1982 and his body was discovered by the then 19-year-old Mark. In 2007 Everett fronted a film Parallel Universes, Parallel Lives for the BBC, in which he went on a voyage of discovery to find out more about the father he hardly knew.
Everett's older sister Liz, made a suicide attempt a few months after their father died of a heart attack. Mark found her on the bathroom floor and was able to get help in time. Liz made several more suicide attempts and spent several years in and out of rehab and mental institutions. She eventually killed herself in 1996.
While Everett was making the 1998 album Electro Shock Blues, about the death of his sister, his mother died from lung cancer.
Everett suffered a further tragedy when his flight attendant cousin died in a plane flown into the Pentagon doing the terrorist attacks of 2001.
In 2000 Everett married Natalia Kovaleva, a Russian dentist but the couple split after five years. On a break from music after a 2014 tour, Everett met a Scottish woman employed in the film industry. The couple, however, divorced some time later.
Though Everett's second marriage didn't work out, he did become a father for the first time, aged 54. Many of the songs on Eels' 2018 album The Deconstruction, including the title track, were inspired by the singer's little son, Archie.

Everett told The Sun that becoming a father at 54 "is quite an unexpected part of my story." He added: "To hold my own child is quite incredible and surreal. I always thought my family name was going to stop with me, so knowing it will keep going is wonderful."
The other Eels members have changed across the years, both in the studio and on stage, making Everett the only official member for most of the band's work.
