Songfacts®:

  • Guy Garvey sings about his dismay at Britain's Brexit vote, which means separating from their European neighbors. He believes the country's plunge towards leaving the E.U. was encouraged by the partisan UK right wing press such as The Sun.
  • Garvey penned this tune on honeymoon in Sardinia.

We pushed the boat out far too far this time
Something we dared never dream on TV every day
Eye for an eye for an eye for an eye for an eye for an eye for an eye
Can I register today I refuse to be afraid
There's a girl a world away who sees love in other people

He told The Sun: "Every morning I was woken up by a kid playing in the sand and it was the loveliest thing to see. When I went to get the music the lads had sent me from Manchester, and as soon as I turned on the wi-fi, all the s--t news poured on to my phone. There was so much violence and negative reaction, prompting the lyrics about 'an eye for an eye'."

"I thought about how when we're born we are so trusting and it takes you a lifetime to turn into a f----ng paranoid, negative bastard. We live in the safest era, but everyone is so frightened."
