Songfacts®:

  • Jeff Lynne explained the story behind this song to The Sun: "That's about my two daughters, trying to gee them up when they're down," he said." I had a divorce and it was a depressing time for them. I'm saying, 'One day the sun will shine on you if you just do what you've got to do. Just face up to it and try to get over it.'"

  • M A from San DiegoSite your source. Parts of what you printed were taken from the 2016 YouTube video clip of Jeff explaining the meaning of some of the songs from "Alone In the Universe". He states he wrote TSWSOY for a friend "...to try and gee [HIM] up when they were going thru a rough time". He was referring to a male friend, NOT his daughters. Nowhere does he state it was written for his daughters to address his divorce from 20 years prior. SO unless you can provide an interview source, this is false/inaccurate information.
