Songfacts®:

  • "O, Fair New Mexico" or "Oh, Fair New Mexico" was written by a native of the State; Elizabeth Garrett had another claim to fame, she was the daughter of Pat Garrett, who shot Billy The Kid. She also had a terrible handicap, being blind almost from birth, an affliction that has not of course been a bar to excellence in the field of music, as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Geoff Long attest.

The tango that was to become the first State Song of New Mexico was sung by her for the Legislature, and was published by Gamble Hinged Music Company of Chicago in 1915. It was enacted State Song on March 14, 1917. >>>
