Songfacts®:

  • Elle King and Miranda Lambert team up to tell a gender-bending tale of two women who meet at the bar. They spend a wild night of debauchery together, well into the wee hours. King said she based the song on their real-life friendship and huge personalities. "Our tumbleweed snowball story of getting to know each other is the ultimate real deal kinda thing," she said. "Nobody revs me up, kicks my ass on stage, or treats me more like family than Miranda Lambert."
  • King wrote the uptempo pop-rocker with the track's producer, Martin Johnson, and recorded it pre-pandemic in Nashville and New York. Their other collaborations include King's 2016 single "America's Sweetheart." Johnson has also worked with Jason Derulo ("The Other Side") and Avril Lavigne ("Here's To Never Growing Up").
  • King has form for country collaborations. The rocker hooked up with Dierks Bentley on "Different for Girls," which reached #3 on the Country chart in 2016.
  • King first worked with Lambert when she was one of the opening acts on the country star's all-female lineup for her 2019 Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars Tour. That year, Lambert released a cover of "Fooled Around And Fell In Love," which featured King and her other tour support acts: Maren Morris, Ashley McBryde, Tenille Townes, and Caylee Hammack. The recording won Music Event of the Year award at the 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards.
  • The song's music video shows King's imaginary wedding day back in 1986 with Lambert as her maid of honor. The feisty bride's nuptials turn into a rowdy, drunken affair after Lambert spikes the punch bowl with vodka. "She asked me to sing on this song," Lambert said of her partner in crime. "It's just a fun party anthem and then nothing happened with it last year because it was last year. Now, finally we got to shoot the music video... basically got to play dress up and sing and drink all day which was great."
  • King revealed to Audacy's Katie Neal she was really anxious about asking Lambert to collaborate on the song because Miranda had already been so generous towards her. "I was really nervous to ask because she had already done so much for me and inviting me on this tour," she said. "I didn't want it to seem like I was taking advantage or anything, but it just seemed like a good idea so I just held my breath and texted her and she said she liked the song."
  • Elle King and Martin Johnson originally wrote "Drunk" back in 2013. It was one of a pair of songs they penned over two days, the other being "America's Sweetheart," which she recorded for her 2015 debut album, Love Stuff. "I always knew that the chorus of 'Drunk' was a banger chorus. It was a big chorus," King explained on The Ty Bentli Show. "I always felt like I had that in my back pocket, but I didn't like the original verses."

When Johnson reached out to King about singing on an entirely different project six years later, she took the opportunity to ask the songwriter to help her redo the verses of "Drunk." Happy with the new version, King was going to record and release it herself before having the idea to get Miranda Lambert involved.
  • "Drunk (And I Don't Wanna Go Home)" snagged Video of the Year at the 2022 ACM awards. Lambert also won Entertainer of the Year, but wasn't present to take home the trophies because of a prior commitment at the C2C Festival in Europe. It was the first time in 17 years the country star missed the event.
  • When this song topped the Country Airplay chart in April 2022, King and Lambert became only the second female duet to hit #1. Reba McEntire and Linda Davis were the first with "Does He Love You" in 1993.
