Songfacts®:

  • Elle King wrote this guitar-heavy rock anthem during her very first night in the studio, while recording the Shake The Spirit album. She texted the guys in the band "Hey! I'm on to something!" However it was 4 a.m., her bandmates were all tucked up in bed asleep, so no one replied.

At the time, Elle King was still reeling from the breakdown of her marriage to Andrew Ferguson and her original lyrics were "I don't need nobody, I don't need no one, there just ain't no loving left in this heart of mine." The singer then realized she didn't believe that sentiment so she changed them to "I don't need nobody, I don't need no one, but I still got a little bit of loving left in me."

When King was joined by the rest of the band later in the day she had a spiritual experience as if her spirit was singing to her. She explained to Billboard: "I was singing it the next day, and it was like pure joy - it was animated for me. I realized what I was singing, and I just fell to my knees and started crying. It's so cheesy, but I looked up and felt like I came back into my body."

The experience was a turning point in her getting over her heartbreak and inspired the album title.
