Songfacts®:

  • "Let It Die" is about walking away from a bad relationship and letting it die. "Letting go of a toxic relationship is hard, so sometimes you just have to cut the cord and drive away, instead of stringing it out for the hurt to build and build," Ellie Goulding told Apple Music. "I don't know anyone who hasn't been in this situation or doesn't know someone who has."
  • Goulding wrote "Let It Die" with songwriter Tom Mann (Lewis Capaldi's "One," Regard's "You," Anne-Marie's "Psycho") and producer Peter "Lostboy" Rycroft (Tom Grennan's "Little Bit Of Love," Griff's "Black Hole," Tiesto's "The Motto"). Tom Mann and Lostboy previously collaborated on Becky Hill's "Last Time."
  • Goulding, Mann, and LostBoy wrote "Let It Die" in a day. "Pete played us a beat and Tom and I seemed to know pretty quickly how the melody should go," Goulding said. "Lyrically I knew it needed to be something dark and empowering at the same time."
  • This is the second song titled "Let It Die" Ellie Goulding released. She previously included a tune of that name as a bonus track on the Target edition of her 2015 album Delirium.
