Songfacts®:

  • "A Dream Come True" is part of The Union, a collaborative album between Sir Elton John and the American musician Leon Russell. Produced by multiple-Grammy winning producer T Bone Burnett, this was the first track the two stars recorded. Elton explained to Rolling Stone how it was inspired by a gospel legend: "We had just convened in the studio. T Bone put up a YouTube clip of Mahalia Jackson, and it inspired us. I went to the piano and started writing. Leon came and played it with me – two pianos, two voices. It broke the ice."
  • When Leon Russell attended one of Elton's early performances at the Troubadour Club in Los Angeles in 1970, Elton was so starstruck he momentarily froze onstage, fearing Russell would critique his piano skills. Instead, Russell became a mentor, helping Elton gain recognition in the US.
