Songfacts®:

  • This club-ready single blends together four of Elton John's much-loved tracks for a song about a relationship that's gone icy. It starts with John performing lyrics from his 1989 single "Sacrifice," then Dua Lipa comes in for the chorus borrowed from Elton's 1972 hit "Rocket Man." The song also features elements from "Kiss The Bride" (originally from the 1983 album Too Low For Zero), and "Where's the Shoorah?" (from the 1976 double album Blue Moves).
  • Dua Lipa planted the seed of the collaboration when she invited Elton John for an Instagram live discussion of his experiences with Studio 54 ahead of her remix album Club Future Nostalgia. A subsequent friendship blossomed, which saw John appear as a guest on Lipa's Studio 2054 live stream. The two then sang together at Elton's 2021 Oscars party, performing "Bennie And The Jets" and "Love Again."
  • The Australian dance music trio PNAU cobbled together the production. PNAU previously released an album of John remixes titled Good Morning To The Night in 2012. That record shared a similar approach to this dance blender, taking samples from John's catalog of recordings and mixing them together to create completely new anthems.
  • The Hamburg-based animator and director Raman Djafari created the video, which sees animated versions of the two singers stepping into a vibrant and euphoric world before separating as their planets drift apart.
  • This became Elton John's 68th career entry on the Hot 100 when it debuted at #81 on the chart dated August 28. The English icon's previous visit to the chart was 21 years previously when "Someday Out of the Blue" ranked at #99 on the chart dated July 29, 2000, after reaching #49.
  • When "Cold Heart" entered the UK Top 10 in September 2021, Elton John became the first artist to rack up a Top 10 song in the UK in six different decades. He overtook Cher, Cliff Richard, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and David Bowie, who each scored at least one Top 10 single in five different decades.
  • The song climbed to #1 on the UK singles chart after three consecutive weeks #2. It marked Elton John's eighth visit to the UK summit and first for 16 years, since his feature on 2Pac's posthumous 2005 single "Ghetto Gospel."

Dua Lipa achieved her third UK #1 with this song. Her previous two chart-toppers were her 2017 solo single "New Rules" and her 2018 collaboration with Calvin Harris, "One Kiss."
  • When the song jumped from #46 to #32 on the Hot 100, it gave Elton his first Top 40 hit since his duet with LeAnn Rimes in 1999, "Written In The Stars." It also broke the record for longest span between first and last Top 40 hit. Elton's first Top 40 was "Your Song," which he released in 1970.

Michael Jackson previously had the record with his 1971 hit "Ben" to his posthumous feature on Drake's 2018 song "Don't Matter to Me."
  • The Lockdown Sessions became Elton's eighth UK #1 album and his first since 2012's Good Morning To The Night.
  • When this climbed to #1 in Australia, Elton, at 74 years, seven months and 14 days, became the oldest artist to top the ARIA Singles Chart. He overtook Paul McCartney, who reached the summit with "FourFiveSeconds," alongside Rihanna and Kanye West, when he was 72.
  • "Cold Heart" is just one taster from eight months of work for PNAU remixing Elton John tracks. "We ended up making 12 to 14 songs. It's full of dance bangers, it's not as broad as (Elton John's) collaborations album," PNAU's Nick Littlemore told Billboard.
  • The song spent 10 weeks at #1 on the Australian singles chart. An impressive achievement, but well short of the record held by Tones and I's "Dance Monkey," which stayed at the summit for 24 weeks.
  • "Cold Heart" re-entered the UK Singles Chart at #30 after Elton John performed it at Glastonbury 2023. Elton's Sunday Pyramid Stage headline slot was promoted as his potentially last-ever UK live show.

Dua Lipa failed to show up on stage to perform her duet vocals with Elton. "The person I did the song with isn't here, so I'm going to ask you to sing her part – and sing it loudly," said the showbiz veteran when introducing "Cold Heart."
