Songfacts®:

  • Christmas songs have become something of a joke, but this one isn't half as bad as its name suggests. The B-side of the excellent November 1973 release "Step Into Christmas" recounts Elton's experience of Christmas Eve; after one brandy too many he sees a man in a red suit emerging from his fireplace.

Co-written with his original lyricist Bernie Taupin, the song has a full chorus, who were obviously playing it for laughs. >>>
