Suzie (Dramas)

Songfacts®:

  • This song places Elton John in character as a county-fair-level musician who is happy as can be as long as he has his pretty little black-eyed Suzie by his side. It would be tempting to say this song borrowed a line from the Guy Mitchell recording "Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie," but this is probably coincidence rather than plagiarism, conscious or otherwise. As Suzie also appears (as Susie) in "Crocodile Rock," it is possible she was an early Bernie Taupin girlfriend, but as Elton's first lyricist is a notoriously private person, we may never know.
  • Running 3:24, "Suzie" is Track 4 on Honky Château, Elton John's first #1 album in America. As well as providing the music, Elton played piano and farfisa organ on the original with the usual band lineup of guitarist David Johnstone, bass player Dee Murray and drummer Nigel Olsson. It was Johnstone's first recording on electric guitar; his previous work was on acoustic. >>
