Songfacts®:

  • Written by Fred Wise and composed by Ben Weisman, this Elvis Presley song was recorded July 2, 1961, and released on an EP the following year. The title track of the 1962 Presley vehicle, it runs to a mere 1 minute 39 seconds, but its real significance is that along with the film it can be said to have launched the career of Tom Petty.

Petty was born in Gainesville, Florida in 1950. When he was a boy, he visited the set of Follow That Dream, which was being filmed in Ocala. In a 1999 documentary, Petty recounted how he got to visit the King's trailer, something that made a big impression on him.
  • Ben Weisman said this was one of his own favourite songs because of its upbeat message, a sentiment that is shared by none other than Bruce Springsteen, who has performed it many times. >>
