Songfacts®:

  • "My Boy Likes To Party" is an electro-pop song that explores the challenges of navigating a relationship when partners have contrasting lifestyles. Emeli Sandé yearns for domestic bliss with her significant other, but his priorities lie in the world of parties and social gatherings, leaving her feeling neglected and longing for deeper connection.

"I wanted to do an anthem for people that have been maybe mistreated – not only for women, because I'm sure it can happen to men as well," Sandé told The Sun. "I wanted the music to be uplifting, so I kind of want it to be a song people can dance to but also get into their emotions."
  • Sandé wrote the trap-influenced song with producer Henri Davies, with whom she also penned her 2022 tracks "Family" and "Summer."

"We always come up with something a little different when we get into the studio together," she said.
  • "My Boy Likes to Party" is the fourth single from How Were We to Know. The introspective collection, marking Sandé's fifth studio album, delves into the full spectrum of love. The album journeys from the depths of heartbreak towards the exhilarating highs of renewed love.

"Once you've been hurt, it's very hard to pick up the pieces again and allow yourself to be vulnerable. So I think these songs explore the bravery of love, and loving others but also yourself," Sandé said of the record.

Sandé has said the songs on How Were We to Know date from the mid-2010s to 2023. During that period, the singer went through the aftermath of her broken marriage to marine biologist Adam Gouraguine to finding love with classical pianist Yoana Karemova (they got engaged in September 2022).
  • In the Tom Stoddart-directed video, Sandé arrives home from a weekend away to find the house in disarray. She walks through the house while clips of a big party are interspersed. Stoddart previously shot Sandé's "How Were We to Know" visual.
