Songfacts®:

  • During a visit to New York, Emeli Sandé was given some beats by Emile Haynie, a hip-hop producer who was worked with Kanye West, Kid Cudi and Eminem. The Scottish singer told Q magazine that when she got home, "I was in the kitchen with my sister listening to the tunes and the song just came to me out of nowhere really. It was definitely a natural one to write."
  • The Dawn Shadforth directed music video finds Sandé taking care of a sick friend in hospital, who appears to have had chemo treatment. The singer explained her inspiration for the visual came from her time as a medical student in Glasgow. "During my time studying medicine, I found it hard to write, but one of the things that inspired me were the patients and the interaction that they had with their loved ones during their time of illness," she shared. "When people arrived at the hospital, money and status became irrelevant and only health mattered, which sparked an honesty between people which was amazing. This interaction, declaration of support and love, was the inspiration for 'My Kind of Love' and something I wanted to try and portray in this video."
  • The song itself was also inspired by Sandé's time as a medical student at a Glasgow hospital. "I wrote it about the patients I met while I was there," she told The Daily Telegraph. "'When you walk into a hospital, everything is left at the door – your status, your money, whatever. All you are is a patient. You're stripped of everything.

Some people have families who come to visit and you see that connection when they realise that maybe they don't have that much time together. It's really naked emotion."
  • For its US single release, the song was re-worked by frequent Lady Gaga collaborator RedOne and his production team member Alex P.
